Miracle Fish

Miracle Fish
Luke Doolan

"8 year old Joe has a Birthday he will never forget. After friends tease him, he sneaks off to the sick bay, wishing everyone in the world would go away. He wakes up to find his dream may have become a reality."

Recently, this short continued to exponentially gain momentum when it earned an Academy Award nomination. I've not seen the full field yet, I'll admit, but if there's one better than this one, then the live action shorts are having a hell of a year.

Spaced

Spaced
BBC

Pre-Shaun of the Dead Simon Pegg leads one of the funniest ensemble casts in the history of television. The show only lasted two seasons, which is far too short for such a tremendous masterpiece of the art of situational comedy.

Fagney and Gacey

Fagney and Gacey
Created by Mike Rose

From the awesomely deviant mind of Channel101 stalwart Mike Rose comes the most amazingly insightful web-series ever to feature two flamboyantly homosexual detectives working together to solve crime and quip cattily the whole way. One of the funniest things you've ever seen, if you have it in you to endure some fun with stereotypes.

Who's Gonna Save My Soul

Who's Gonna Save My Soul
Music by Gnarls Barkley
Dir. Chris Milk

Great music video/short film. The music pairs surprisingly well with the characters' story, once more demonstrating Gnarls Barkley's flexibility which has set him apart for so many years.

Maybe One Day

Maybe One Day
Chris Cottam

Exciting visually, with an inspired and impassioned narrative, Maybe One Day leaves the viewer feeling surprisingly fulfilled. A fine example of what a short film can accomplish.

"What do you do when you've had enough of the daily grind of city life? A film about
life and experience, Chris Cottam's "Maybe One Day" is a story of heightened feelings, pensive moments and joy. It is a visual diary of one man set to a musical composition by the director."
