Death to the Tin Man

Death to the Tin Man
by Ray Tingori

This is a definitively fantastic look at love and sacrifice, wearing the skin of Frank Baum's legendary Tin Man.

"Bill loves Jane and she loves him, but in this small town, many are jealous of Bill, especially the volunteer firefighters. Bill calls them cowards, puts out fires by himself, and doesn't cooperate with small-town church values."

Erik the Viking

Erik the Viking
Directed by Terry Jones

You lucky, lucky, lucky dog you. I love this movie. I love this movie so much that about six years ago, I spent a month trying to find a mint condition copy in the US. Ending up buying it on VHS for about twenty bucks. Totally worth it.

This is a completely underrated, absolutely hi-larious work of art. If you haven't seen it, cancel your plans, and queue this bad boy up.

"Norse warrior Erik travels over the edge of the world, across the Rainbow Bridge to Asgard."

The Ganzfeld Procedure

The Ganzfeld Procedure
Keith McCarthy

The Ganzfeld Procedure boasts such an uncanny blend of cinematography, tantalizing imagery, romantic notions, and inventive concepts that it's remarkable all of its substance could fit into a short film. Reminiscent of The Science of Sleep and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, this short carves its own groove, comfortably settling in alongside the aforementioned in the same cog. This is a truly remarkable work.

Visions of Horror

Visions of Horor
Artsalliance

In the interest of full disclosure, the scene pictured above was the only available promo shot I could find. I can only assume that's because it's the only moment in the entire thing even resembling nudity (except a wormy guy in a shower, but, you know). Furthermore it's from Hooligan's Alley which is far and away the most unacceptable piece on here.

I wouldn't recommend you go into this expecting to stumble across the next Nightmare on Elm Street, but you may well get a peek at the next Wes Craven. This compendium of off-the-wall, disgusting, macabre, and downright creepy shorts which range from ridiculous to excellent from moment to moment offers something for pretty much any horror fan, with an ability to appreciate some of the lower-budget, on-the-fly horror.

Some of this is absolutely disgusting and some scenes are thoroughly disturbing.

Order of appearance: My Skin!, Slumber, What Ever Happened to the Zombie Killers, Callous Sentiment, Trick or Treat, Hooligan’s Valley, and Scream for Me

My ranking, best to worst: Callous Sentiment (super inventive, great tone), My Skin! (I couldn't help but think Edgar Allan Poe would be proud of this creeper, though I doubt he'd really get it either), Trick or Treat (a bit on the goofy side at moments, but somehow keeps you on edge), Slumber (really quality direction saves a piece that lacked pretty much everything else; you'll likely finish this one unfulfilled, but impressed), Scream for Me (super disturbing, sadomasochistic, with a powerful sense of reality which honestly was a little more than I could hack; House of a Thousand Corpses fans, enjoy), the introduction, the closing credits, anything else that wasn't either: What Ever...Zombie Killers and Hooligans Valley. Yuck. I applaud abstract creativity, so I feel guilty panning the creators of these two flicks. But come on, how did this half-assed garbage sneak into a tight assortment of entertaining horror shorts.

Scrubs

Scrubs
ABC Tuesdays at 9/8c

Many wrote this series off as dead when they wrapped last season with what truthfully could have been an excellent series finale, only to shockingly be picked up for another season. Rather than go the way of the typical spin-off implosions, Scrubs has really picked up with the past four episodes (two per night for the last two seasons) behind the strength of their new leading lady Lucy, filling in for the departed JD.

If they keep this up, you might as well go ahead and get to know the characters, before we all get hooked again.

Territory

Territory
by Wei Hou

Excellently crafted and visually understated CGI animation about the insignificance of war. Well done, particularly for a student project.

”This animation is from a Taoist fable which tells the story about the battle between two countries for more territories on tiny snail horns. HUGE and TINY are not only visual, but also psychological effects.”

Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult

Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult
(Call it a Sunday Double Feature)

The final installment of the Naked Gun series was my personal favorite. Though the topical jokes that dominate will likely be lost on the younger audience, the real charm of this movie is that it is arguably the last properly-executed vehicle for the unique brand of comedy Leslie Nielson helped pioneer with classics such as Airplane and the Naked Gun series.

"Ed coaxes his "Police Squad" pal Frank out of retirement to thwart a terrorist bombing."

The Naked Gun 2 & 1/2: The Smell of Fear

Leslie Nielson and the rest of the Police Force descendants bring the slapstick, pun-laden, sight gag magnificence back with all their might.

Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) loves a mystery. Why are we here? Is there life after sex? Yes, Drebin tackles the big issues - and the biggest of all is how to stop devious Quentin Hapsburg's (Robert Goulet) plan to destroy the environment!

Heroes

Heroes

A terrifically imaginative and thoroughly engrossing show, Heroes has seen a lull in TV viewership in recent seasons. That's partially because Monday's a rough night to settle in for a thinker-heavy show, and partially because if you miss an episode, you're out cold.

So catch up here. Currently, the last 15 episodes are available, I've placed the most recent here. To watch an earlier episode, type "Heroes" into the searchbox at the top right of the video screen.

Sic Transit Gloria

Sic Transit Gloria
Gwendollyn Van Jules

This is an avant garde piece from German director Gwyn Van Jules. It's beautifully filmed and staged with an eerily sweet soundtrack. Abstract and indefinite, this short manages to touch very personally on the wonder of the new and the inevitability of destruction, utilizing a familiar set of standards brought out in a unique voice. As affecting a short as I've seen this year.

From the director: "This is my first film, shot in July 2009.
The English translation of the title is "Thus fades the glory."
The team and myself would really appreciate your interpretations on it!
Thanks for viewing!"

John Lovitz uses every snide note he plays to create the perfect caricature of the Honky Teacher Saves the Hood cliché we all wanted to serve some due justice.

Britain's Best Mates

Britain’s Best Mates

Jamie Glassman, Matthew Steer, Jon Levene

This pre-bromance craze romp hilariously pairs a couple of brittish mates who have redefined the term. Not for the kiddos in the least.

“This 5-minute short dips into the lives of Phil and Phill, recently crowned Britain’s Best Mates for 2007. Phil and Phill are gay to everyone in the world except themselves.
This short is filmed in documentary style and follows our subjects as they are interviewed on a sofa relaxing at home, having dinner together, bathing, preparing before a big night out and at bedtime.
Phil and Phill are both single, effusive in their adoration for women, avid readers of Nuts and Zoo magazines, big England football fans, desperate to get laid and constantly helping each other improve their chances with the opposite sex in the only way they know how. “

Wonderful Hunter S. Thompson drug-addled biopic, expertly acted by Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro whose performances lend the audience a taste of the actual bewildering effects of their trippy trip. Equal parts pitifully funny and sad.

Fumi and the Bad Luck Foot

Fumi and the Bad Luck Foot
Producer: Konstantin Abadjiev

Fumi and the Bad Luck Foot

Great animated short with a sweet, though visually maturely streetwise in allusions, message and endearing character.

"We're not talking warts, corns, or a nasty toe fungus. Fumi's left foot attracts far worse trouble than that. Can she overcome her misfortunate foot, or is Fumi destined for a life of pain and misery (albeit quite hysterical misery)?" View Video Screen

Dawn of the Dead (2004), Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Dawn of the Dead

This 2004 installment is one of my personal favorites; not just in the Dead series, but among Zombie flicks.
“An unexplained plague has decimated the world's population and yet, the dead aren't dying. They've become zombies, stalking endlessly in a constant quest to feed on the flesh and blood of the few remaining living.”

And of course, if you’ve never seen the original Night of the Living Dead, there’s no time like the present.
